Sleep & Rest

Rest helps dogs recover physically and process new experiences. Constant activity can lead to over-stimulation instead of a happier dog.

At Daphne's, a day includes play, enrichment, outdoor time, calm time and rest. A dog doesn't have to play nonstop to have a great day.

Rest topics

Puppies and sleep

Puppies need a lot of sleep as their bodies and brains develop. An overtired puppy may become nippy or wild.

Adult dog sleep

Healthy adult dogs commonly spend a large part of the day resting or sleeping.
Senior dog sleep

Senior dog sleep

Older dogs often sleep more and may need softer beds and quieter rest spots. Ask your vet about big changes.

Why dogs may sleep more after daycare

New smells, social time and enrichment take mental energy. A long nap afterward is normal.

Why constant activity isn't always beneficial

Too much stimulation without breaks can make it harder for dogs to settle.

Structured rest periods

Planned quiet times give the body and brain a reset between activities.

Overstimulation

Signs can include frantic behavior, mouthing, not listening, or not settling.

Signs a dog may need a break

Yawning, turning away, shaking off, sniffing the ground, or seeking a quiet spot.

Decompression after social activity

Calm time at home — a chew, a sniff walk, a nap — helps dogs wind down.
