Nutrition & Ingredients

Good nutrition supports everything from energy to coat health. These are general basics — your vet can help with your individual dog.

Nutrition basics

Protein

Provides amino acids for muscles, skin, coat and many body functions.

Fat

A concentrated energy source that also supports skin and coat.

Carbohydrates

Can provide energy and fiber in many complete diets.

Fiber

Supports digestion and stool quality.

Water

The most important nutrient — fresh water should always be available.

Calories

Small dogs need fewer calories, so small extras add up quickly.

Treats

A common guideline is to keep treats to about 10% of daily calories.

Reading a dog food label

Look for a nutritional adequacy statement saying the food is complete and balanced for your dog's life stage.

Wet food vs dry food

Both can be complete and balanced; wet food adds moisture, dry food is convenient. Ask your vet what suits your dog.

Food enrichment

Using part of the daily food in puzzles or lick mats adds mental work without extra calories.

Safe treat portions

Break treats into tiny pieces for small dogs.

Why sudden food changes upset digestion

Gut bacteria need time to adjust. Transition gradually over about a week unless your vet advises otherwise.
